Breakdown

  • Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite is finally getting good graphics thanks to modders
  • FGC YouTuber Maximilian Dood hired modder Ryn to give this game a better artstyle
  • They're giving the game a cel-shaded look reminiscent of Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3

Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite was considered by many to be one of the ugliest fighting games released at the time and one modder is hoping to change that. A modder was hired to give Infinite a much better artstyle in hopes of renewing interest in the maligned fighter.

Prominent fighting game figure and YouTube personality Maximilian Dood hired game developer Ryn to make MvCI prettier with a much better artstyle. While the mod isn’t available yet, Ryn has been posting her modifications of the game on Twitter and they look incredible.

At the time of writing, only Ryu, Spider-Man, and Zero have been shown and they look a lot better now than they originally did in Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite. The cel-shading used does make it look similar to Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, but considering how much better that game looks, no one’s really complaining.

Seeing Maximilian Dood try to make the game look better isn’t too surprising, since he’s one of the few prominent FGC figures who likes the fighter. The YouTuber hasn’t ignored the game’s many flaws, but feels that some of the fighting mechanics and new moves for older fighters are inspired.

It really is a shame that Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite opted for a pseudo-realistic artstyle with ugly character models, since the game would have benefitted from looking more comic accurate. UMvC3 aside, games like Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order and the upcoming Marvel Rivals show that a more animated artstyle has plenty of appeal. Having some X-Men and Inhumans would have helped as well, but there’s no point crying over spilled milk.

There doesn’t seem to be any plans for a new Marvel vs Capcom game, as both companies are busy with their own plans. Marvel Rivals is set to be an Overwatch-style shooter that could bring back fans who feel burned by Overwatch 2’s awful changes. Capcom released Street Fighter 6 to critical acclaim and are still working on more of the game’s DLC.

Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite is readily available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, with only the latter getting mod support.
